WHY THEY WORK

The secret? A synthetic material unique to Légère, meticulous computer controlled processing operations

and a team of ambitious and hardworking individuals who passionately believe in the Freedom to Perform.

Materials
Design Process

Cane is a unique material—lightweight, yet surprisingly stiff along the grain. That unique combination is what makes it vibrate so well. Reproducing those properties in a synthetic material isn’t easy—but it’s exactly what we’ve done.

Our reeds are made from a special formulation of polypropylene—a non-toxic, food-safe polymer you’ll also find in medical equipment, yogurt cups, and packaging. On its own, polypropylene is far too flexible for a reed. So we strengthen it through a process called orientation, which aligns the polymer fibers to dramatically increase stiffness. That’s the secret to the signature feel and response of a Légère reed.

Because our material doesn’t absorb moisture, Légère reeds don’t need soaking, never warp, and are ready to play right out of the case. They’re durable, hygienic, and can be cleaned easily with warm water and a mild detergent. It’s cane—refined.

Oboe reed

I’m so glad I decided to purchase the American Scrape oboe reed. The first time I tried it I was able to take it from the case and start playing without having to soak it.

Great Reed!

Great reed! It was very flat, as many have said, but I sanded the bottom down and it’s in tune.

The fabulous four

Oboe Reed arrived two days after it was ordered. Our first chair oboist showed us hers and by the following rehearsal all of us (4) oboes had legere reeds which we played on together at rehearsal and our outdoor concert.

Just what I needed

My embouchure is not what it used to be. Eventually I'll work my way back up to a Medium or Hard reed, but this Soft American scrape reed is what I need right now. Love it!

Medium - sounds great but is a bit hard

Wow! I wasn’t expecting that. Great tone and pitch. But, I’m out of practice after many years away from my oboe, so I’m going to order a medium-soft reed to help work my way up to this one. No regrets!

Great discovery!

I found the American scrape oboe reed to be responsive, easy to play, and having a nice, warm sound. I am an intermediate level player and still taking lessons so still have a lot to learn and master. But, I have found this reed has helped me do many things with less struggle and more joy. Practicing is much more positive and my enthusiasm has been recharged. I would highly recommend this reed to any player!
