OUR STORY

Our Beginning

Légère Reeds was founded in 1998 by Dr. Guy Légère and Dr. Mark Kortschot with a clear purpose: to make reeds more consistent, more durable, and easier for musicians to rely on.

Guy, a chemist and clarinetist, knew the frustration of searching for a good reed. Mark, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Toronto, brought expertise in polymers and material science. Together, they began developing a synthetic reed that could offer the response players expected with the stability modern materials could provide.

From Prototype to Performance

The first Légère reeds were made one at a time on a home-built CNC machine. After years of testing and refinement, early prototypes were brought to ClarinetFest in 1998. Players tried them, responded to them, and bought them. The reeds sold out in half a day.

That early response helped confirm there was a real need for a reed that could play reliably without soaking, adjusting, or being affected by changing weather and humidity.

Made in Canada

Today, Légère reeds are designed, tested, and manufactured in Canada by a skilled team with deep experience in materials, tooling, and reed design.

Every reed reflects a careful balance of science and musical feedback. We continue to refine our products through testing, player input, and ongoing development across saxophone, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and other reed instruments.

Made for Musicians

Légère reeds are used by students, educators, amateurs, doublers, and professionals around the world. They are designed to be ready to play, consistent from reed to reed, and durable enough for regular use.

No single reed is right for every player. That is why our product lines are built around different playing needs, from easy response and flexibility to projection, stability, and tonal focus.

A New Chapter with Music Center

In 2024, Légère joined Music Center S.r.l., an Italian company founded in Trento in 1974 by Luciano Pisoni. Music Center is known worldwide for components and accessories for wind instruments, especially its work in woodwind pads, precision manufacturing, and in-house production technology.

Légère is now part of a growing family of specialist music accessory brands that includes Pisoni, Rovner Products, Valentino, Pomarico, Chedeville Lelandais, and Denis Wick. Together, these companies bring expertise across reeds, pads, ligatures, mouthpieces, brass accessories, and other products used by musicians, repair technicians, retailers, distributors, and instrument makers around the world.

For Légère, this partnership represents continuity and growth. Our reeds continue to be made in Canada by the same experienced production team, while Music Center’s global reach and complementary expertise create new opportunities to serve musicians in more markets.

The goal remains the same: to make reliable, high-quality products that help musicians play with confidence.
