Javier Andrés Ocampo

Colombian-Ecuadorian Performing Saxophonist and Educator

Colombia-Ecuador

With Légère by my side, I feel like I'm playing in the future. I can always trust that if something goes wrong, it’s not my reeds. They are simply always ready for whatever I need.

Since making his solo debut with the Colombia National Symphonic Band at just 18 years old, Dr. Javier Andrés Ocampo has established himself as one of Latin America's leading proponents for the traditional and contemporary saxophone music. Through his work as a performer, educator, researcher, and artistic collaborator, he has become a driving force in the creation, performance, and international promotion of Latin American repertoire for the instrument. His commitment to expanding the saxophone's artistic possibilities has inspired the composition of more than 55 new works in different formats, significantly enriching the instrument's repertoire and strengthening its presence within the cultural and musical landscape of the region.

Dr. Ocampo graduated with highest honors from the Antonio María Valencia Conservatory in Cali, Colombia. He later received a prestigious scholarship from the French Government to study at the Conservatoire de Musique et Danse de Bourges, France, before earning a full talent scholarship in Classical and Jazz Saxophone at Arizona State University, where he completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree under the mentorship of internationally acclaimed saxophonist Timothy McAllister.

As an internationally active concert artist, Dr. Ocampo has performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, and clinician throughout the Americas and Europe. His artistic career has included recordings, concert tours, premieres, and masterclasses that reflect a deep engagement with contemporary and Latin American music. His performances have earned top prizes and distinctions in prestigious national and international competitions in Colombia, France, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Peru. He has also been invited to present concerts, lectures, and masterclasses in Panama, Brazil, Costa Rica, the United States, Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, France, Spain and throughout Colombia.

His discography reflects a sustained commitment to promoting Latin American composers. As a soloist, he has released three albums: Concomitant: Modern Latin American Music for Saxophone (2012), Conciertos Colombianos, Vol. 3: Música Andina Colombiana para Saxofón (2016), and Eu Soy Latino (2017), recorded with Ocaruz Dúo for saxophone and traditional marimba. He has also recorded two albums with the 4V Saxophone Quartet: Conciertos Colombianos (2016) and Entre Valles, Ríos y Montañas (2022). Beyond the classical stage, his versatility has led him to collaborate as a performer, producer, composer, and vocalist on numerous commercial and popular music projects.

In addition to his performing career, Dr. Ocampo has demonstrated distinguished leadership in higher education and arts administration. He served for eight years as Dean of the Faculty of Music at the Antonio María Valencia Conservatory in Cali, Colombia, where he led significant academic and artistic initiatives and the renowned Bellas Artes International Saxophone Festival (FIS-Cali). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Latin American Saxophone Association (ALASAX), he is an artist for Victory Musical Instruments, Legere Reeds, director of the 4V Saxophone Quartet, and a founding member of the acclaimed CAOVVA Saxophone Quartet, collaborating with some of Colombia's most distinguished saxophonists.
