Irene Fernández Mena

Spanish Saxophonist and Professor of Saxophone

Spain

What I value most about Légère is the confidence of knowing the reed will respond. That sense of freedom allows me to focus on what truly matters: sound, color, musical expression, and the joy of making music

Irene Fernández Mena is a Spanish saxophonist and Professor of Saxophone at the Conservatorio Superior de Música Manuel Castillo in Seville. Her artistic identity is shaped by a constant search for sound, color and expressive freedom, moving naturally between classical repertoire and contemporary creation.

As a performer, she develops solo and chamber music projects that combine original repertoire, transcriptions and new works, with a particular interest in expanding the saxophone literature and in bringing greater visibility to music by women composers.

Her international activity has taken her to Europe, Asia and Latin America, with appearances at the World Saxophone Congresses in Gran Canaria and Harbin, China, the European Saxophone Congress in Trento, Italy, as well as artistic and educational projects in Colombia, Amsterdam and Italy.

Alongside her performing career, she has taught since 2007. In 2018, she became the first woman in Spain to obtain a Professorship of Saxophone through competitive examination.

Irene Fernández Mena is a Selmer Paris Artist.
