Double reeds ask a lot from a material. The blades need to be thin enough to respond freely, strong enough to hold their shape, and stable enough to work together as a matched pair. Cane has long been valued because it combines lightness, stiffness, and vibration. Reproducing that balance in a synthetic double reed took years of material development, tooling, and refinement.
Légère reeds are made from a proprietary formulation of polypropylene, a non-toxic, food-safe polymer also used in medical equipment, yogurt cups, and packaging. On its own, polypropylene is too flexible for the demands of a reed. We strengthen it through a process called orientation, which aligns the material’s internal structure to increase stiffness and improve response. That controlled stiffness is central to the feel, stability, and consistency of a Légère double reed.
Because our material does not absorb moisture, Légère double reeds do not need soaking, are not affected by humidity in the same way as cane, and are ready to play right out of the case. They are durable, hygienic, and easy to clean with warm water and a mild detergent. It is the double reed experience, rethought.
