WHY THEY WORK

The secret? A synthetic material unique to Légère, meticulous computer controlled processing operations

and a team of ambitious and hardworking individuals who passionately believe in the Freedom to Perform.

Materials
Design Process

Cane is a unique material—lightweight, yet surprisingly stiff along the grain. That unique combination is what makes it vibrate so well. Reproducing those properties in a synthetic material isn’t easy—but it’s exactly what we’ve done.

Our reeds are made from a special formulation of polypropylene—a non-toxic, food-safe polymer you’ll also find in medical equipment, yogurt cups, and packaging. On its own, polypropylene is far too flexible for a reed. So we strengthen it through a process called orientation, which aligns the polymer fibers to dramatically increase stiffness. That’s the secret to the signature feel and response of a Légère reed.

Because our material doesn’t absorb moisture, Légère reeds don’t need soaking, never warp, and are ready to play right out of the case. They’re durable, hygienic, and can be cleaned easily with warm water and a mild detergent. It’s cane—refined.

Quit procrastinating and just get one

First lets get past the the hard part.... they are expensive!!.. I get about 9 hours out of a cane reed so I am hoping to get at least 40 hours out of one of these. I have about 20 hours of playing on one of these now and there is no difference to the first play right out of the box. I tried all three strengths and and chose to purchase 3 medium hard as that was most like my own reeds. The soft just did not feel right, the medium were alright but the hard were most like my normal reed. Every reed I tried (at the Legere Toronto studio) was as good or better than a typical store bought reed. The reeds are not identical but 100% were very playable (I probably tried 20 to pick my 3). These reeds were better than all but my very very best cane reeds. I purchased on a Thursday and played a major concert on one on the Sunday. The tuning is pretty much consistent on all notes, the tone is decent . On my Yamaha the reeds pretty much play an A440 when pushed all the way in. On my oboe they are not flat at all. The embouchure is slightly relaxed over when I use a cane reed. If you are a doubler then these are a no brainer. You do not need to waste your very best cane reeds on practice. My cane reeds are a bit more responsive and do play louder but the pp on these reeds is exceptional. The responsive on low pp notes is better than my cane reeds. You play right out of the case, no soaking at all and they play just as well at the end of a two hour concert as at the very beginning. In fact identically... All oboe players should have one of these in their case for backup and to use for practice sessions and rehearsals. I tried the euro scrape and hated them but I normally play on an american scrape cane reed . FYI these were played on a Yamaha Custom 831

Awesome reed

It is so much easier to use without the need to soak it. And it also sounded so nice. Highly recommended.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with us.

Great Reed

As an amateur but enthusiastic player with poor reed making skills, this is just what I'm looking for. It's reliable, consistent and with just the tone I'm looking for.

Thank you for your thoughtful review! We're thrilled to know you enjoyed your reed.

Pitch issues

The reed played flat to start but after playing it a few times it became easier to play in tune. I’ve used it for a few public events including solo work with no problem. Tone is as good as a cane reed. Level of resistance is perfect.

Thank you for your thoughtful review! We're thrilled to know you enjoyed your reed.

Great reed for a beginner

I'm an adult (senior) beginner with only 20 or 30 hours of experience on oboe and I've never played any other woodwind instrument. I started using cheap cane reeds, soft and medium soft. It didn't take long to get frustrated with those so I purchased a Legere medium soft European scrape reed. That gave a better sound and vastly better consistency than the cane reeds but was not easy for me to play.

I find the Legere medium soft American scrape reed much easier to play than the European scrape reed. It seems more forgiving and I can get better dynamic range and a wider variety of tones. This reed has motivated me to continue playing.

I have no idea what a proficient player would think of this reed.

Thank you for your thoughtful review! We're thrilled to know you enjoyed your reed.
