WHY THEY WORK

The secret? A synthetic material unique to Légère, meticulous computer controlled processing operations

and a team of ambitious and hardworking individuals who passionately believe in the Freedom to Perform.

Materials
Design Process

Cane is a unique material—lightweight, yet surprisingly stiff along the grain. That unique combination is what makes it vibrate so well. Reproducing those properties in a synthetic material isn’t easy—but it’s exactly what we’ve done.

Our reeds are made from a special formulation of polypropylene—a non-toxic, food-safe polymer you’ll also find in medical equipment, yogurt cups, and packaging. On its own, polypropylene is far too flexible for a reed. So we strengthen it through a process called orientation, which aligns the polymer fibers to dramatically increase stiffness. That’s the secret to the signature feel and response of a Légère reed.

Because our material doesn’t absorb moisture, Légère reeds don’t need soaking, never warp, and are ready to play right out of the case. They’re durable, hygienic, and can be cleaned easily with warm water and a mild detergent. It’s cane—refined.

Medium Soft Oboe American Scrape

I was reluctant to purchase a Legere reed for my oboe. I read a lot and listened to a lot of you tube videos. I decided to take a chance. I am very pleased with my decision. The reed plays right out of the box. The reed has enough resistance that makes the sound quality very good. Compared to a cane reed, if you have one that plays perfect all the time then that maybe better but this Legere reed plays great and intune. I have two notes that will play a little flat and I have to adjust. I am completely satisfied. Thanks,

Oboe and English horn American scrape

I’m pleasantly surprised by the latest Legere Reeds. At first the oboe reed was slightly under pitch, however as I played on it, it came up to pitch beautifully. The depth of sound in the reed is excellent, and pitch easily stays spot-on. As for the EH reed, I’ve not played on it enough to be able to give an accurate evaluation.
The oboe reed, a medium soft , gets an A from me!

Excellent tone and usability

I bought this for my daughter as the $20 cane reeds have not been very successful. I have bought the cane reeds through Amazon, Etsy and Sweetwater. None of them really seem to be great except 1 out of 10, and even then it only lasts at most 3 weeks. With the synthetic reed from Legere pretty much everything is better. Even my daughter's oboe teacher is amazed by the synthetic reed and has purchased some herself. In her words the technology wasn't there before but apparently it is now. My daughter has less squeaks, better tone and seems to even have better dynamics. Even though this reed is an investment it ends up being cheaper in the long run. She seems to like the American scrape better than European as she does have both.

American Scrape oboe reed works great--especially for practicing

I've found the reed works really well, and its consistency has been a real time-saver for my practicing, because I haven't learned how to adjust my own reeds yet. I can concentrate on technique without constantly having to search for a reed that can play in all registers necessary for scales, etc., or wondering if problems result from me or from the reed. My major complaints are that it is a very tight fit into my Fox Renard oboe and condensation builds up very quickly inside the reed. Otherwise, I'm really, really pleased with it.

Very surprised

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of sound and responsiveness. It seems to be a little below A440 but as I haven’t played in a while, it may be me lol.
