How can we help you?

How can I tell if a reed isn’t right for me?

You are here:

There are a number of issues that could cause a reed to not feel “right” for a player. Below, find a list of symptoms and their likely causes.

  1. Tone Issues

Thin, nasal, or buzzy tone? -> Reed may be too soft, too thin, or unbalanced

Muffled or dead sound? -> Reed could be too closed, too hard, or waterlogged

Tone changes a lot between registers? -> Reed isn’t vibrating evenly or is warped

  1. Response Problems

Hard to start notes (especially soft ones)? -> Reed may be too hard or tip too closed

Sluggish articulation? -> Reed is too resistant or not vibrating freely

Notes “crack” or jump registers? -> Tip too open or reed is unstable

  1. Intonation Struggles

Notes are consistently flat? -> Reed is too soft, too open, or needs clipping

Notes are sharp in upper register? -> Reed too stiff or closed, forcing excess lip pressure

  1. Physical Strain

Tires you out quickly? -> Reed is too hard or resistant

Jaw/lip tension required just to make it play? -> Not a good match for your embouchure/mouthpiece
